LOVE SONG

Not who or what you love, but that you love.

That to stand there or sit there, to simply

Be: this is hard. To look across from you,

Where someone else or no one or both may

Or may not be: this is hard. This is hard

Because you love and have learned not to love.

You say love, say you’re filled with love;

Even to the edge of doom and all that.

But how perverse and proximal hate can be,

Like a volcano emptying itself

Onto the small town sprouting in its shade;

Hate ruling your continent, hate burning

Your air, hate sitting beside you under

A perfect moon, leaning in like love would

As the moon fades into the blue whiteness

Of dawn. We all share that awed silence while

The woke birds sing. We are all savages.
